October 1918...Bad Month Influenza

All from the same family...in a matter of days

October 1918 was a very bad month to be in Mogollon.  A devestating Influenza outbreak decimated the population as shown in the picture above.  This family lost most of the young men aged 19-24 in a matter of days.

This has to be the best ghost town in New Mexico.  Located 12 miles NE of Glenwood on a windy, one-lane mountain road, Mogollon is hard to get to but worth the trip.  An Inn, Musuem and shops await those that make the pilgrimage here. History abounds and the museum caretaker will tell you as much as you want to know.
This gold mining town survived floods, fires, epidemics and raids by Geronimo's son-in-law, Victorio.  Geronimo received most of the press, but Victorio, he was far more dangerous.

Mogollon is inhabited by as many as 14 and as few as 4 people depending on the time of year.  Some live in restored mining cabins, others have been more creative.
Most of the residents are more connected to Mother Earth than any self-professed tree hugger will ever be.  Great group of people!
